Kentucky millwright wages run around $31.50 an hour at the statewide median. Louisville’s FY2026 federal lodging allowance reaches $164, with $80 for meals.

ROADHAND DATA TEAM

The number that matters first

For Kentucky millwrights, the May 2024 BLS statewide median was reported at $65,520 a year, or roughly $31.50 an hour on a straight 2,080-hour conversion. That is the wage picture for the full occupation—not a special automotive-construction rate and not a traveling-hand package. It includes plant maintenance, machinery installation, shop work, and lower-paid positions across the state.[7]

The national BLS median for millwrights was reported at $63,990 annually in May 2024. Kentucky’s reported median sits slightly above that national figure.[7]

That statewide number is a starting point, not a bid sheet. A millwright on a major automotive plant build may see a different package depending on contractor, scope, shift, union status, certs, shutdown work, overtime rules, and whether the job is greenfield construction or post-startup maintenance.

Track the baseline at /wages/national/millwright and compare it with /wages/kentucky/millwright.

Why automotive builds can pay differently

Automotive construction is not ordinary millwright work. The job can include conveyor systems, process equipment, precision alignment, rigging, machinery setting, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, guarding, and commissioning support. The plant owner’s schedule drives the money. When equipment is arriving late and production start is fixed, skilled hands with layout, alignment, rigging, and startup experience become more valuable.

The premium may show up through overtime, shift differential, travel pay, per diem, subsistence, or a higher base negotiated by the contractor. Do not confuse that package with the BLS median. BLS reports occupational wages across the market; it does not tell you what a particular traveling crew will clear on a compressed plant schedule.

The same warning applies to public-work wage claims. Davis-Bacon rates are job-specific federal construction floors made up of base wage and fringe benefits. They apply only when the project is covered by federal funding or a related federal contract. Check the active wage determination through the Department of Labor and SAM.gov before treating it as applicable to a Louisville job.

Louisville travel math

Louisville is not covered by the standard FY2026 CONUS allowance. GSA lists Louisville, Jefferson County, with a $164 daily lodging allowance in October 2025, dropping to $120 in November, December, and January, then $155 from February through May 2026, $134 from June through August, and back to $164 in September. The FY2026 meals-and-incidental-expenses rate is $80 per day.[1][2]

Those are federal reimbursement benchmarks, not a promise that a contractor will pay them. A company may provide a hotel, furnish a room, pay a fixed per diem, reimburse receipts, or offer a package with different rules. Get the policy in writing before mobilizing. Ask whether travel days are paid, whether per diem is reduced on days off, and whether the lodging portion is taxable under the company’s arrangement.

A Louisville room at the GSA ceiling can eat a large part of a travel package during peak construction periods. If the contractor offers a flat allowance below that ceiling, run the weekly housing cost before comparing hourly rates. Use /housing/louisville and /area/louisville-ky for the local picture.

What to verify before signing

  • Base rate, overtime rate, and the point at which overtime starts.
  • Shift premium for nights, weekends, or commissioning shifts.
  • Per diem amount, eligibility rules, and whether it continues on scheduled days off.
  • Hotel, camp, shared housing, or lodging reimbursement terms.
  • Travel pay, mileage, flights, and mobilization time.
  • Tool, rigging, lift, and certification requirements.
  • Expected project duration and the demobilization trigger.
  • Whether the work is installation, alignment, startup, punch-list, or maintenance.

Do not accept “good money” as a complete offer. Ask for the full weekly package in writing. A lower base with steady overtime and paid lodging can beat a higher base with unpaid travel, weak per diem, and a short schedule. A contractor’s reputation matters just as much as the headline rate; check /contractor and submit your own verified package at /pay/submit.

Bottom line

The defensible public benchmark for Kentucky millwright work is about $31.50 an hour at the May 2024 statewide median, not a made-up automotive megaproject rate.[7] Louisville’s FY2026 GSA benchmark gives travelers a useful housing comparison—up to $164 for lodging plus $80 for meals and incidentals, depending on month.[1] The job offer still comes down to the contractor’s actual base, overtime, per diem, lodging, and schedule. Price the whole package before you head north—or turn down the call.
