Williston welder pay depends on the job: shop wages, field premiums, overtime, per diem, and whether the work is tied to federal construction.
The short version
Bakken welder pay is not one clean number. A Williston shop job, a pipeline spread, a plant shutdown, and a federal heavy-construction project can all carry different rates and different compensation packages.
The published benchmark is the Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics dataset. Its latest available release is May 2024, with national, state, and metropolitan/nonmetropolitan estimates available through the BLS tables. For the working welder, the offer needs to be broken apart: base rate, overtime rules, per diem, travel pay, lodging, subsistence, shift premium, weld test requirements, and whether the job is direct hire or through a contractor.
What the BLS number does—and does not—tell you
BLS OEWS data includes the full population of the trade, including lower-paid shop and production work. It should not be confused with a traveling-welder package that includes overtime and per diem. Use the national and North Dakota figures as a market reference, not as a field-rate guarantee.

Where the Bakken premium comes from
The premium is usually attached to the assignment, not the word “welder.” Field work can pay more when it requires pipe welding, structural work, stainless or alloy procedure qualification, coded welds, remote travel, night shift, shutdown pace, or a short mobilization window.
A serious offer should spell out whether overtime starts after 40 hours, whether travel days are paid, whether per diem is paid for every calendar day, and whether housing is supplied or deducted. Ask for the pay schedule in writing before booking a flight or driving west.

Private employers can offer more, less, a company room, or no per diem at all. Confirm whether the quoted amount is tax treatment, reimbursement, or a flat allowance, and whether it continues on days off. Federal work: do not confuse the floor
Davis-Bacon prevailing wage applies only to covered federally funded or federally assisted construction. It is not the general Bakken wage and does not automatically apply to private oilfield work. A valid determination combines a base wage and fringe benefits, and the active determination must match the classification, county, project, and contract.
For federal work, check the current determination through the U.S. Department of Labor government-contracts page and the active listing on SAM.gov before relying on a number. Do not accept a recruiter’s “prevailing wage” claim without the wage determination and classification.
